Aa! Megami-sama (Ah! My Goddess!)
- Trailer: There isn’t really a good one out there. I suppose you could watch the opening, which at least sets the right tone.
- What it’s about: Keiichi was born unlucky, but has never taken it as an excuse not to do his best to be a good guy. To balance out the positive karma he’s accrued, a representative of the “Goddess Agency” overseeing the world, a girl/goddess named Belldandy, is sent to Earth to fulfill any one wish he might have. He wishes for her to stay.
- Why you should watch it: It’s a “switch off your brain, sit back, and enjoy” ecchi romantic comedy. The focus is diverted from the standard school setting to supernatural hijinks. The characters are both fun and funny, and the story slowly but steadily progresses as the romance builds. The show is careful about having enough action thrown into every episode to keep you engaged. In the end, it’s a throwaway series, but it’s not a bad one at all.
- Caveats: The humour is primarily slapstick with a dose of sitcom shenanigans. If you’re looking for something deeper, this probably isn’t going to satisfy. The characters don’t stray out of the tropey moulds they’re set up to fill. Finally, the show is over a decade old now, so while the animation is still eminently watchable it might seem a little dated.
